We were keen to visit the School of the Air Visitor Centre whilst in Alice recently. The presentation was very informative and the presenter clearly passionate about the work that is carried out here. Firstly we watched a short film (10 minutes) about the history of School of the Air together with the huge challenges faced by families living on remote properties throughout most of the Northern Territory, northern South Australia and eastern Western Australia. The broadcast area is about 1.3 million kilometres.! We were also able to view classes in progress. Everyone here is clearly passionate about the work they undertake. We bought books for the library and donated them on behalf of our grandchildren. Don’t miss this experience particularly if you have children of a similar age to those learning in this unique way.

We spent a fabulous morning here at the Alice springs school of the Air, learning about how classes are conducted today, while watching a morning class in action on the screen provided. this was followed up by a short film and presentation talking about the history of the school of the Air, along with the challenges learning in this remote environment entails. The Presentation was lively, informative and educational for everyone attending.

A great insight into the school of the air. No school happening at the time so they showed a class recording

Don't miss this experience, in observing the students in far away station properties, learning all about life and education in the world's largest class room, 1.300,000 square kilometres, it was a real eye opener for us city residents. Don't forget to donate some books to the distant students.

I honestly wasn't expecting this to be such an interesting tour, but I'm glad I got the chance to visit. I think this is an especially interesting place to visit for educators and radio equipment nerds (I am neither), but worth checking out.

Visited here today and couldn't believe the infrastructure I walked into. I was so impressed with how the lessons are delivered and to see a lesson and hear about how the whole system works works. Great insight into outback life I never knew of before and well worth a visit if in town

If you have no interest in neither education or outback life this might not suit you, but I found this a great experience, well worth the money, even being on a budget. Also the money goes to fund the school supplies for the kids. I came in on my own. You get to see a 10-15 min long introduction video and then get a 15-20 min tour of the facilities and history. As I do have some limited teaching experience I had lots of questions and my guide answered everything and took lots of time to make the most out of my visit. It felt very personal. Afterwards you are free to stay as long as you'd like and watch lessons.

A great place to learn about how the children living in remote areas can access school. The guided tour takes you through the history to present, you can even watch live classes happen!

Many Australians have heard of SOTA, but actually seeing what they do, and the logistics involved is a whole other experience! The money spent for the entry fee helps fund the school, so there are worse things to spend your cash on! Don’t forget to donate a book while you’re there, too!

This was very informative about how kids in the outback are educated. You can watch a 'live' lesson if there's one in progress, otherwise they have recordings. Also interesting video, hand made artifacts and museum pieces showing the progress over 60+ years. Bus stop right outside. Entry price is classified as a donation. Allow an hour there.
